Tinnitus is the medical term for the sensation of hearing sound in your ears when no external sound is present. Sufferers typically describe the sound as “ringing in the ears,” however others describe it as hissing, buzzing, whistling, roaring and even chirping.
How is it treated?
At present, there is no known cure for tinnitus; however there are a number of recommended methods to relieve it, including counselling and sound therapy. Hearing aids can be an effective part of any sound therapy and according to the non-profit organisation Better Hearing Institute, “the use of hearing aids improves communication, reduces the stress associated with intensive listening, and also can partially mask tinnitus.”
